FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State split a tri-meet with Azusa Pacific (L, 276.960-273.280) and Gannon (W, 273.280-267.600) on Thursday evening in the 2016 home opener for the acrobatics & tumbling team at Joe Retton Arena.
 
A score of 9.80 in the compulsory toss heat by Fairmont State helped the Falcons take an early lead over both APU and GU into the second event of the evening.
 
Azusa Pacific gained the lead following acro by scoring a 9.85 in the 5-element heat, as the Cougars held a 66.05-65.55 advantage over FSU after two events. Gannon stood at 63.80 points following two events.
 
The teams were evenly matched during the pyramid event, as the lowest score by any of the teams was a 9.75 out of 10. APU still edged both teams in the event, leading 95.95 (APU) - 95.05 (FSU) - 93.40 (GU) heading into the half.
 
APU won their third-straight event in the toss with a score of 28.35 in the three heats. Gannon also gained some ground on Fairmont's lead, outscoring the Falcons 27.90-27.60 in the three toss heats.
 
Azusa Pacific and Fairmont State added to their leads in tumbling, as APU added an addition point and had a team score of 179.15 heading into the team event. The Falcons used three scores of 9.5 or higher in tumbling to defeat the Knights by nearly three points in the event, leading 176.25-172.00 over Gannon heading into the team routines.
 
APU edged out Fairmont in the team event, 97.81-97.03 to wrap up the victory in the tri-meet. The Falcons earned a split by holding a 97.03-95.60 advantage over Gannon in the team routine.

The Falcons will now travel to Waco, Texas for a tri-meet against Baylor and Adrian on Monday evening.
