JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- Matt Edwards hit a triple in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift West Virginia Wesleyan past Fairmont State, 6-5, on Thursday night at Point Stadium in the WVIAC Tournament.
Fairmont State (21-27) continues in pool play tomorrow night against Alderson-Broaddus. WVWC (28-17) will take on Concord.
The Falcons struck first in the game in the third inning when Trevor Funk hit an RBI single to center field. The Bobcats countered for two in the bottom half of the inning, but the Falcons knotted the game up in the top of the fourth after Tyler Barnette's RBI double scored Ryan Fondriest, who had led off the inning with a double. Fondriest would then break that tie in the fifth inning with a two-run home run to center.
The Bobcats would add a single run in the bottom half of the fifth inning, but then took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the eighth on Spencer Webley's two-run home run. The Falcons rallied for a single run in the top of the ninth on a Nick Hallis RBI double. He brought home Jeremy Walter who had led off the inning with a double.
WVWC stranded three runners in the 11th, but then scored the deciding run with two outs in the 12th. Webley hit a two-out single that was followed by Edwards game-winning hit.
Fondriest finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Funk also had a pair of hits to go with an RBI.
Ryan Fenwick pitched 7.2 innings giving up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Nick Mayle (3-2) took the loss in relief pitching four innings giving up the one run on three hits.
WVWC starter Aaron Adams pitched eight innings giving up four runs on five hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts. Andrew Ornes (4-4) picked up the win in relief pitching three scoreless innings.
