INDIANAPOLIS -- For the third-consecutive year, Fairmont State University's Community Engagement Initiative was judged by an NCAA committee to be considered the best in the WVIAC. (Watch FSU's Community Engagement Highlights | Community Engagement Submission [PDF].)
The 2011-12 initiative was themed "Experience Fairmont at Fairmont State" and focused on bringing local businesses, restaurants and groups on to campus to help expose those aspects of the Fairmont community at selected FSU athletic contests.
"We are very happy to once again be recognized as having the best community engagement initiative in the league," said Rusty Elliott, director of athletics. "Community engagement is a top priority for our school and athletic department, and we think we're doing a good job accomplishing our mission."
Community engagement is an important Division II initiative directed at building meaningful, long-lasting bridges among athletics programs, their institutions and the communities in which they are located.
Nebraska-Kearney was named the 2011-12 national winner. Fairmont State won the national award last year.
