VIENNA, W.Va. -- Fairmont State pounded out 16 hits and held off Shepherd late to defeat the Rams, 7-5, in the first game of the WVIAC Tournament.
The Falcons (30-20) got four hits from senior Brittany Tallhamer. Freshman Carly Mundie added three hits for the Falcons, and Sarah Parsons and Holly Frampton had two hits apiece. Chelsea Cobb, who went the distance in the circle for FSU, added a two-run hit in the top of the seventh to help secure the victory.
FSU got out to a quick start with three runs in the first, but Shepherd responded with four of its in the bottom of the second to lead 4-3. FSU evened things up in the third with an RBI single from Herzberger, and the Falcons went ahead 5-4 in the fifth on a Herzberger sacrifice fly. Cobb added some insurance in the seventh with her two-run single, and Shepherd threatened with a run in the bottom half, but Cobb was able to limit the Rams to just one run before ending the rally.
Cobb picked up her 21st win of the season by going all seven innings allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
