FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State volleyball team opened the season with a pair of victories at the third annual Falcon Fest Tournament at Joe Retton Arena. The Falcons breezed through their first matchup against Urbana, 3-0, but was pushed to the limit in a five-set win over King College, 3-2.
Against Urbana, the Falcons cruised to the three-set win by scores of 25-14, 25-13 and 25-17. Bri Swann and Leslie Giordan paced FSU with nine and eight kills, respectively. Tabbie Bias dished out 26 assists and Tiff Smathers added 10 digs. Fairmont State had an impressive .403 hitting percentage for the match.
Against King College, the Falcons dropped the first set 26-24 and were on the verge of losing the second set trailing 24-16. However, FSU mounted a furious rally to come away with the 26-24 win in the set. The Falcons then edged King in the third set, 25-23, but the Tornados stayed alive with a 25-20 victory in the fourth set. Fairmont State surged past King College in the fifth set, 16-14, to clinch the win.
Swann again led the way for Fairmont State with 16 kills and 20 digs. Giordan added 15 and Amber Wilson notched 12. Bias recorded 55 assists for the Falcons, and Smathers had 30 digs.
The Falcon Fest Tournament will continue tomorrow with games starting at 8 a.m. Fairmont State plays Notre Dame College at noon and finishes up against Edinboro at 6 p.m.
