CLARION, Pa. -- Fairmont State's volleyball team remained unbeaten with a five-set win over American International at the Clarion Classic Volleyball Tournament on Friday afternoon. With the win, FSU improved to 5-0 on the year.
The Falcons dropped the first set, 25-23, but bounced back with a win in the second, 25-17. FSU then fell behind again with a loss in set three again by a 25-23 score, but rallied to win set four (25-18) and finally in set five (15-13).
"We were really pushed today by a scrappy American International team," said head coach Larry Hill. "We played hard and fought through a tough match, and today truly tested the depth of our team. We used 12 players during the match and each of them contributed to this win."
Bri Swann led the Falcons with 17 kills against just two errors on 38 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .395. She also added 15 digs for FSU. Leslie Giordan added 10 kills and Erin Harwood contributed a season-high eight kills. Tabbie Bias had 44 assists and Jess Margo addded seven.
The defense was led by Tiff Smathers' 25 digs. Smathers and Harwood each led FSU with five aces apiece.
FSU continues play in Clarion on Saturday against Slippery Rock and host Clarion.
