ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord rolled past Fairmont State 41-10 on
Saturday afternoon in Athens. The Mountain Lions scored 21 points on four FSU
turnovers to pull away from the Falcons.
Fairmont State falls to 3-5 overall and 3-3 in the WVIAC. Concord improved to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
The Mountain Lions totaled 358 yards compared to just 138
for FSU. Concord also converted 10-of-18 third down attempts compared to just
1-of-13 for the Falcons.
Bobby Vega went just 9-of-21 for 63 yards on the afternoon.
Chris St. Hilaire caught four passes for 38 yards on the afternoon. Shad
Alexander led the ground attack with six carries for 31 yards and a touchdown.
Jake Kelly racked up 14 tackles on the defensive side of the ball for the
Falcons.
Evin Dusold went 17-of-25 for 212 yards and four touchdowns
and just one interception to lead the Concord offense. Ansel Ponder was on the
receiving end of three touchdown passes and finished the day with nine catches
for 141 yards. Jocorey Robins led the CU ground attack with 17 carries for 58
yards and a score. Jake Lilly continued his stellar season on the defensive
side of the football recording 13 total tackles (four solo) and a forced
fumble.
The first quarter started as a defensive struggle before
Concord broke the tie on a 48-yard strike from Dusold to Ponder to make it 7-0.
On the following FSU possession, Monroe was unable to bring in a wild-cat snap
on fourth and short that was recovered by Riyahd Richardson. The Mountain Lions
capped an 11 play, 49-yard drive with a one-yard carry by Robins to give CU a
14-0 lead.
Concord took over at the FSU 22 after Keith Ferguson
recovered an FSU fumble. Five plays later, Dusold found Randall Hawkins for a
four-yard touchdown. The Falcons finally got on the scoreboard with a 23-yard
field goal by Johnny Dearstine that capped a 12 play, 67 yard drive and went
into the locker room trailing 21-3.
FSU committed its third turnover on the afternoon when a
Collin Alford fumble was recovered by Matt Anderson at the FSU 23. Dusold found
Ponder for the second time on the afternoon from four yards out to extend the
Concord lead to 28-3. After a three-and-out by both teams, Concord lined up in
a punt formation and ran a direct snap to Austin Dotson who took off for 41
yards down to the FSU 11 yard line. Dusold once again found Ponder for the six
yard touchdown. Bryan Wilson blocked the point after giving CU a 34-3 advantage.
After a blocked FSU punt, Calvinaugh Jones added a five yard
touchdown run to extend the Concord lead. The Falcons finally got into the end
zone after a four-yard run by Shad Alexander to wrap up the scoring and give
the Mountain Lions the 41-10 victory.
The Falcons will return home for senior day next Saturday
when they host WV State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
