Bruce Schaefer was one of the pioneers for Fairmont State swimming as he was the first NAIA qualifier in school history. Over his time, Schaefer was a four-time NAIA National qualifier and was a holder of various records at Fairmont State.
Following the 1972-73 season, Schaefer was named the Most Valuable Swimmer and in 1975 he won four WVIAC Championships (50 Free, 100 Free, 100 Breaststroke and 800 Free). After graduation, he went on to a successful coaching career and as a head coach he coached an Olympic trial finalist and several other qualifying trial swimmers.
Schaefer also coached two Junior National Champions and several Senior National qualifiers including a finalist. As an assistant coach, he worked for Solotar Swim in the Washington D.C. area which has produced an Olympic Gold Medalist and a world record holder.
