Harney's School Record Leads FSU Past UVa-Wise

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Nick Harney set Fairmont State and Mountain East Conference records to help FSU roll over the University of Virginia's College at Wise, 98-54, on Saturday afternoon at Joe Retton Arena on senior day for the Falcons.

Harney scored 48 points in the victory, which passes the old Fairmont State record that was held by Dave Miller since the 1966 season and was tied by Marvin Rashad during the 2005 season. The scoring performance is also a MEC record and ties for the best Division II scoring performance of the season. His 20 field goals also break a school record that was held by four different players and is the most in Mountain East Conference history. The 20 field goals are the most by any Division II player in a single game this season.

With the win, FSU improves to 18-9 overall and 15-6 in the MEC. UVa-Wise falls to 2-23 overall and 1-19 in the league.

In addition to Harney's performance, Jamel Morris also reached double figures with 11 points in the victory. Brandon Vega, Chase Morgan, Thomas Wimbush and Taiwo Badmus each added eight points for the Falcons. Harney led the team on the glass with seven rebounds and Brandon Vega passed out a team-best seven asssits.

The Falcons shot just under 52 percent from the field and drained 10 three-pointers in the victory. The Falcons also held a dominating 54-14 advantage scoring in the paint and pulled down 15 more rebounds than the Cavs. In addition, FSU forced 22 UVa-Wise turnovers and scored 33 points at the opposite end.

UVa-Wise was limited to just 16 field goals in the loss. The Cavs were led by Philip Owens II with 18 points and a team-high four assists. Brian Sydnor was the only other UVa-Wise player to reach double figures by recording a double-double for UVa-Wise with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Fairmont State broke open a close first half at the 11:15 mark by going on a 16-2 run and never looked back in the vicotry. The game was tied three times and UVa-Wise held a slim lead for a four minute stretch early in the opening half.

The Falcons will now have a week off before traveling to Shepherd for a 4 p.m. tip next Saturday.
