MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State men's and women's swim teams are currently in third place heading into the second day of competition at the West Virginia State Games in Morgantown. The event was the inaugural swim meet at the Mylan Park Aquatic Center, the new home of West Virginia University Swimming & Diving.
 
The Falcons finished the opening day with nine top 10 finishes and recorded the best time of all Division II swimmers in eight different events on Friday evening.
 
The women's times on Friday evening were highlighted by a fourth-place finish by Emily Gersper with a time of 1:09.95 in the 100 breaststroke. Zsofi Bevardi also turned in a pair of top 10 finishes, finishing 6^th in the 1000 Free, and 8^th in the 200 Butterfly. In addition, Courtney Deem's time of 2:03.63 in the 200 Free was the best time of any DII swimmer at the event.
 
On the men's side, Ricard Castan recorded the top finish of the day for the Falcons after finishing fifth in the 1000 Free with a time of 10:34.05. The time was the best of any DII swimmer. Pedro Gaspar and Majester Abdul-Jalil also turned in sixth place finishes for the Falcons in the 200 Free and 100 Breaststroke events. Gaspar had a time of 1:45.02 in the 200 Free, and Abdul-Jalil added a time of 58:64 in the 100 Breaststroke.
 
The Falcons were also impressive in the 200 Medley Relay event, with the men placing fourth with a time of 1:40.49, and the women taking fifth place with a time of 1:57.85.
 
The second day of action will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Mylan Park Aquatic Center in Morgantown.
