ST. LOUIS -- Fairmont State sophomore
Lukas Martin finished the season with a 14-0 record and won the NCAA Division II National Championship in the 149-pound weight class on Saturday evening at The America's Center in St. Louis.

Martin picked up his historic national championship win by earning a 12-5 decision over Garrett Aldrich of St. Cloud State during the night session. Martin grabbed an early lead in the first round and never looked back in the win.

With the win, Martin becomes the first wrestler in Fairmont State history to win an individual NCAA national championship. He is also the first NCAA All-American in program history.

As a result of his 4-0 performance this weekend in St. Louis, Martin was also named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the 2021 NCAA Division II National Championship event.

On Saturday afternoon, Martin earned his spot in the championship final by edging the top-seed in the 149 bracket, Gavin Londoff from Lindenwood, by a 3-2 decision. In the national semifinal, Martin recorded a takedown with 24 seconds remaining to grab the lead for good.

The national semifinal featured a pair of undefeated wrestlers.

During the championship. Martin won one bout by major decision and three by decision. He earned 20.0 team points for Fairmont State, the second highest team total from the Mountain East Conference and the 16
th best in the country.

Seven wrestlers from the Mountain East Conference earned All-America honors, with three winning national titles. In addition to Martin's national title, West Liberty's Cole Laya and Tyler Warner also won national titles at 125 and 133.
