Falcons Beat Out Concord to Continue Undefeated MEC Streak

DeAngelo leads all scorers and Gibbs claims double-double

FAIRMONT, W. VA. – Fairmont State's women's basketball team (11-1, 6-0 MEC) edged Concord (5-6, 2-3) 70-63 in a home Mountain East Conference matchup. As of Jan. 2, the Falcons currently sit at No. 12 on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) weekly rankings.
 
Alyssa DeAngelo, who recently surpassed 1,500 career points donning a Fairmont State jersey, led all scorers with 22 points. Jalen Gibbs recorded 12 of her own to go along with 11 boards for her first double-double of the season. Aaliyah Brunny also had 12 points, while Leslie Huffman knocked down nine and dished out five assists. Madeline Huffman had seven points, three steals, and five assists.
 
Gibbs and Bre Wilson notched layups early in the first quarter of action. The Mountain Lions continued to battle offensively, where Brunny had a fast break layup and a three to adjust the score to 11-9 over CU with 3:40 left in the opening quarter. Two free throws apiece by Leslie Huffman, DeAngelo, and Madeline Huffman helped maintain a healthy lead heading into the second quarter with a score of 21-13. DeAngelo drained a three, and two more free throws to continue on with her offensive success. Brunny knocked down her second shot from behind the arc with 5:24 to go in the first half. Katy Darnell managed a layup in the paint to put her side up by twelve, 31-19. A layup by Wilson with five seconds left had the Falcons leading at the half 37-21.
 
Starting the second half, Leslie Huffman recorded two points, while DeAngelo added five herself on two separate buckets. The Falcons went into the final quarter holding the advantage 56-41. The Mountain Lions went on a successful scoring run, where they scored six consecutive buckets to only trail 56-50 with over six minutes left in the contest. A jumper by Darnell and a three by DeAngelo helped to battle this. Concord was within four points of the Falcons with 2:42 to play, where Madeline Huffman was able to convert on a triple on the next possession. Two layups by Gibbs had FSU up by 11, 68-57. Leslie Huffman sealed the win with two free throws which helped to make the final score 70-63.
 
Next Up
The Falcons will travel to Wheeling for their next MEC contest against the Cardinals of WU. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. this upcoming Wednesday (Jan. 10).
