EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- The Fairmont State University wrestling team took part in the NCAA Super Region I Championships hosted by East Stroudsburg University. The Falcons had a program-record four placers with
Colton Stoneking qualifying for the NCAA Divsion II National Championships.
At 141 pounds, Stoneking started his day with a 12-1 decision over Giovanni Scafidi from Felician University. In the quarterfinals, Stoneking bested Cole Coffin of Shippensburg University with a 7-0 decision.
In the semifinals, Stoneking battled Joey Ortega (Kutztown University). After the first period, Stoneking held a 4-2 lead thanks to a takedown and an escape. In the second period, Ortega tied the match at four with a reversal but Stoneking scored a point with an escape. In the third period, Stoneking registered an escape for the final score of 6-4.Â
Stoneking medically forfeited in the championship bout to place second and punched his ticket to the NCAA Division II Championships. This is his third-straight year of being an NCAA qualifier.Â
Cooper Durst finished fourth in the 184-pound weight class. After winning his first match thanks to a 6-4 decision, Durst fell in the quarterfinals by a 5-1 final. In the consolation bracket, Durst bested Frostburg State's Andrew Wolfanger with a 12-1 major decision. Durst faced Cole Casilio (Kutztown) in the third-place bout. Durst fell in the match, 8-2, earning fourth-place.
Trace Ragland finished fifth in 133, going 2-2 on the day.
Tyler Wise was the other Falcon placer as he earned a sixth-place finish at 285, going 2-3 for the afternoon.
Stoneking will represent Fairmont State University at the NCAA Division II Championships in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The tournament will start on Friday, March 13.
