Stoneking Bows Out of NCAA Championships

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Fairmont State's Colton Stoneking wrestled at the NCAA Division II Championships. After winning his opening match, Stoneking fell in the wrestlebacks to end his season.

In his first match, Stoneking faced Carsen Richards of Lake Erie College. After a scoreless first period, Richards took the early lead with an escape. Down 1-0 in the third, Stoneking registered an escape to even the score. Neither wrestler was able to notch a point in the first overtime. In the second overtime, Stoneking once again pulled off an escape to take a 2-1 lead. Stoneking was able to hold on in the third overtime for the 2-1 decision.

Advancing to the quarterfinals, Stoneking faced fifth-seeded Joseph Airola of Nebraska-Kearney. Stoneking grasped the early lead in the second period with a reversal. Airola notched an escape but the Falcon still hled a 2-1 lead going into the third.

In the third period, Airola was able to pull off an escape to even the score at two. In the final 30 seconds of regulation, Airola got a takedown for the 5-2 lead and held on for the match victory.

Moved down to the wrestlebacks, Stoneking faced James Wright of Central Missouri. Stoneking took an early lead with a takedown. Wright eventually escaped but going to the second period, Stoneking led 3-1. The second period was all Wright as he received a point from an escape before taking the lead with a takedown. Down 5-3 in the third, Stoneking pulled a reversal to even the match at five. However, Wright was able to escape and regained the lead, 6-5. Despite trying to land a late takedown, Stoneking ultimately fell by the 6-5 decision.

Stoneking finishes the season with a 24-5 record.as he was a two-time MEC Champion and the two-time MEC Most Oustanding Wrestler.
