Ryan Courtney

Ryan Courtney enters his sixth year as a member of the athletics administration at Fairmont State, currently serving as the Deputy Director of Athletics since fall of 2020. In his current role, Courtney leads the department's fundraising efforts and assists with the day-to-day operations of the department. He also supervises game operations for the department.

Courtney was previously promoted to Assistant Director of Athletics for Internal Operations during January of 2019, and served as Interim Director of Athletics from March to August 2020.

Courtney joined the athletics staff at Fairmont State in August of 2016 after spending 16 years in operations, and membership and tournament sales at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, W.Va. - one of America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses according to Golf Digest. Courtney also assisted with tournament operations at the Nationwide Tour Players Cup at the Pete Dye Golf Club and at the PGA TOUR's - The Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.

Courtney has been instrumental in the growth of athletics at Fairmont State since he arrived in the fall of 2016, assisting with the day-to-day operations of the department, and supervising all game day operations & marketing, budgets, team travel, ticket sales and branding.
 
Courtney was instrumental in the completion of the 2019 turf project at Duvall-Rosier Field, which replaced the playing surface for the Fairmont State football, soccer and softball programs. Duvall-Rosier Field is also used during practice and strength & conditioning for each of Fairmont State’s 17 athletics programs.

In 2018, Courtney was at the forefront of Fairmont State’s new contract with BSN Sports and Nike as the department’s official provider of apparel and equipment.

In 2016-17, Courtney served as tournament manager as FSU athletics hosted a first round NCAA Division II Playoff Game in football and the Atlantic Regional Tournament in men's basketball. Courtney also helped manage travel party arrangements as the men's basketball team advanced to the Division II Elite Eight in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Courtney returned to college athletics after serving in a coaching capacity at Alderson Broaddus University in 2013-14 as an Assistant Coach for the Wrestling program. He also spent five seasons as the wrestling coach at Bridgeport High School from 2004-09. Courtney began his coaching career at West Virginia University as a graduate assistant following his standout wrestling career at West Liberty University.

As member of the Hilltopper wrestling team, Courtney earned All-American honors and placed seventh-nationally during his junior season in 2001.

A Fairmont native, Courtney attended Fairmont Senior High School prior to enrolling at West Liberty University to earn a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.

Courtney currently resides in Bridgeport with his wife Whitney. The couple has three children: Mackenzie, Savannah and Cole.
