Terry Deremer

Fairmont State alumnus Terry Deremer is entering his seventh season as Head Men's Tennis Coach.  He took over the program on Feb. 27, 2019. Deremer was also named the Head Women's Tennis Coach in January 2022.
 
Deremer has been around the game of tennis for over 40 years as a collegiate head coach and tennis professional, most recently serving as Director of Tennis at The Greenbrier prior to his retirement.

The men's tennis team went 11-8 for the 2024 season as it finished second in the Mountain East Conference. The team won its first NCAA Regional match against West Virginia Wesleyan before falling to the University of Charleston. Elia Barozzi and Kan Watanabe were named First Team All-Mountain East Conference as Mohamed Moens and Alexandre Pages were named to the Second Team.

The women's tennis finished the 2024 campaign with a 12-9 record as it placed second in the Mountain East Conference. For the second-straight season, the Falcons made it to the NCAA Atlantic Regional and won its first ever NCAA Regional match against Merychurst University. Maria Fonseca was named MEC Player of the Year and First Team while Hope Backx was the Freshman of the Year and First Team. Lara Smith was named Second Team All-MEC for the year.

In 2023, the men's tennis team finished with an 18-3 record and won the Mountain East Conference Championship. The Falcons then won the NCAA Atlantic Regional and qualified for the NCAA Nationals. The team finished first in the region as Deremer was named the ITA Division II Coach of the Year. Five Falcons were named All-Mountain East Conference honors as Elia Barozzi (First Team), Mohamed Moens (Second Team), Alexandre Pages (Second Team), Seena Saadevandi (Second Team) and Kan Watanabe (Second Team) while Deremer was named MEC Coach of the Year. Barozzi was also named Academic All-American and received the NCAA Elite 90 Award.

The women's team finished 2023 with a 13-7 record and second in the Mountain East Conference. The team qualified for the NCAA Regionals for the first time in program history. Maria Fonseca was named First Team All-Conference while Elodie Buclin (Second Team), Ainara Pastor Garcia (Second Team) also received All-Conference honors.

In the spring of 2022, Deremer guided the men's tennis team to its first appearance in the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament since 2018. Three Falcons garnered All-Mountain East Conference honors in 2023 as Elia Barozzi (First Team), Bartosz Losiak (First Team), and Seena Saadevandi (Second Team) all were named this past spring.

Deremer also took over the women's tennis program in January 2022. Fairmont State women's tennis finished the season in the conference semifinals as Ainara Pastor Garcia (First Team) and Emme McKnight (Second Team) were named to the All-MEC Teams in the spring.

In 2021, the men's tennis team finished with a record of 9-4 and made a semifinal appearance in the MEC Tournament. During the season, the Falcons ranked as high as No. 4 in the Atlantic Region rankings. A trio of Falcons landed on the All-MEC men's tennis team following the season. Bartosz Losiak and Gui Pachane were both first team All-MEC picks, while David Velayos earned second team honors. Gui Pachane was named the 2021 recipient of the Jasper H. Colebank Award as the university's male senior athlete of the year.

Joao Martins also earned postseason recognition in 2021 as a CoSIDA Academic All-American and All-District selection.

During the 2019-20 season, Deremer led the Falcons to a 3-2 start to the year before the COVID-19 pandemic ended the season on Mar. 13. Following the season, senior Joao Lucas Alves earned the Jasper H. Colebank Award as the university's male senior athlete of the year. Alves ended his career as a three-time All-MEC first team selection and was also named CoSIDA Academic All-District on May 21.

During his first season with the program in 2018-19, Deremer helped the Falcons to a 9-9 overall record, including a 5-2 mark in conference play. The Falcons earned the No. 3 seed in the MEC Tournament and advanced to the semifinal round. The Falcons were also ranked as high as No. 8 in the Atlantic Region Rankings late in the regular season and just missed out on a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

A trio of Falcons earned All-MEC honors following the 2018-19 season, including Alves as a first-team selection. Joao Martins and Gui Pachane also earned second team All-MEC honors following the season.
 
“It is a privilege to welcome Terry back to Fairmont State to lead our men’s tennis program,” said then-Director of Athletics Chad Fowler. “We are very fortunate to have an alumnus with as much experience as Terry and we are pleased that he has agreed to return and lead our program.
 
“We have an experienced roster that is coming off an Atlantic Regional appearance a season ago, and I look forward to seeing their improvement under Terry’s leadership,” Fowler added.
 
Prior to taking over at the Greenbrier, Deremer served as head men’s tennis coach at West Virginia University from 1979-1994, where he was a two-time Eastern Collegiate Coach of the Year (1988, 1990) and led the Mountaineers to three-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (1988, 1989, 1990).
 
During his time in Morgantown, Deremer compiled a record of 263-169 (.609) during his 14 seasons at the helm of the program. He coached all three of West Virginia’s men’s tennis All-Americans, and coached seven players that moved on to have professional careers.
 
Deremer has served as a tennis professional since 1976, and has instructed over 75 juniors players that have moved on to have collegiate careers. He has also had numerous junior players that have appeared in the national tennis rankings during his career.
 
Deremer received two awards from the United States Tennis Association (USTA) back in 2014, including the Lifetime Service Award, and the West Virginia Section Lifetime Achievement Award.
 
A member of the Fairmont State University Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2013, Deremer was a two-time first team All-WVIAC selection and helped lead the Falcons to a 55-24 record and three WVIAC baseball championships (1967, 1968, 1970) during his storied collegiate career on the diamond. The Falcons also made two NAIA National Tournament appearances during Deremer’s playing days, including in 1970 when the team had a 19-5 overall record.
 
Following his senior season at Fairmont State, the New York Mets selected Deremer in the 29th round of the 1970 Major League Baseball Draft, where he played three seasons for the organization.
 
Deremer graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education in 1970, and received a Master’s of Arts Degree in Physical Education from West Virginia University in 1976. He currently holds affiliations with the USTA and United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA).
