FSU Falls Short Against Glenville State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Glenville State pulled out an 86-81 victory over Fairmont State on Monday afternoon to pick up its first win of the season. The Falcons led by three at the half before the Pioneers grabbed a lead early in the second half, aided by 12 second half turnovers by the Falcons.

Fairmont State (5-1, 1-1 MEC) was led by Amanda Ruffner off the bench with 20 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Hallie Gunnoe just missed a double-double with 19 points and nine boards and Hailey Garrett recorded her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 boards despite battling early foul trouble. Emily Lohr also just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Keyanna Tate shot 10-of-16 from the floor with 23 points and nine rebounds in the victory. Katrina Salins (19) and Paige Tuttle (14) also reached double figures for the Pioneers. Glenville State recovered from shooting just 32 percent in the opening half by shooting 46 percent in the second half. The Pioneers also limited their turnovers to just 11 and had 12 steals in the game.

Fairmont State had a dominating 57-39 advantage on the glass and scored 44 points in the paint.

Glenville State opened up a 12-2 lead at the 16:11 mark of the first half after a layup by Tate. However, a quick two by Lohr and a three by Tess Zufall cut the lead to five at the first media timeout. Over the next 14 minutes of the game, FSU slowly chipped away at the single-digit Glenville State lead before Gunnoe scored four straight and Zufall went 1-of-2 from the line in the final minute to send the Falcons to the locker room with a 41-38 advantage.

The Pioneers opened the second half with four quick points to take a 43-41 lead that began an eight-minute stretch with the Pioneers holding a slim advantage. At the 11:21 mark of the second half, Gunnoe drilled a three to give the Falcons the lead for the first time since the opening minute of the second half. The lead didn't last long, however, as Glenville State went on a 16-8 run over a nine-minute stretch and pushed its lead to 10 (84-74) at the 3:33 mark.

The Falcons responded with a quick seven-point stretch, capped by a three from Zufall, to cut the GSC lead to three (84-81) at the 1:24 mark. From that point, the Falcons were unable to attempt another field goal until Gunnoe put up a three that would have tied the game with 11 second to play but the shot bounced out and the Falcons were forced to foul with under 10 seconds to play. After Le'Shaughn Jones went 1-for-2 from the line, Ruffner had one more chance to cut into the lead but the shot missed and Glenville State's Kristin DesRocher was fouled with only two seconds to play. After she buried 1-of-2 from the line, the Pioneers took the 86-81 lead.

The Falcons will now have a few days off for Thanksgiving before hosting Salem on Monday, December 1 at 6 p.m. at Joe Retton Arena.
