Falcons Down Yellow Jackets With Strong Second Half

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- Fairmont State used a strong second half to down West Virginia State, 92-82, on Saturday evening at the Convocation Center in Institute.

The Falcons improve to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Mountain East Conference. WV State slips to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in the league.

The Falcons shot 50 percent from the floor and 45 percent (9-of-20) from three in the victory. Although Fairmont State was out-rebounded by 13 (47-34), the Falcons held a 42-34 advantage scoring in the paint.

Jamel Morris led the Falcons with 19 points in the victory. Chase Morgan, Nick Harney and Caleb Davis each chipped in 17 points apiece for FSU. Harney recorded his first double-double as a Falcon by also pulling down 12 rebounds and blocked five shots in the victory. Shammgod Wells had a team-high six assists.

Dimitrios Jelen-Joy had a game-high 20 points and Devin Delaney added 17 to lead WV State. Dominic Phillips just missed a double-double with 15 points and nine assists and Steve Wing added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The game was tied eight times and the lead changed five times in the opening half of the game. With Fairmont State holding a six-point lead after a three by Chase Morgan at the 2:49 mark of the first half, the Yellow Jackets went on a 5-0 run to send the game to the break with FSU leading 46-45.

Harney went 5-of-7 from the field and scored 13 points in the first half for the Falcons. Morris also reached double figures in the first half with 11. FSU was out-rebounded, 24-11, in the opening 20 minutes of the game.

The first eight minutes of the second half remained close until a 13-2 run by Fairmont State broke open the close game and gave the Falcons a 78-65 advantage with 8:23 remaining. Morgan paced FSU during the stretch by knocking down 3-of-4 three-pointers.

In the closing minutes, West Virginia State was unable to cut the FSU lead to fewer than nine points and the Falcons wrapped up a 10-point victory (92-82).

FSU will host Bowie State on Monday evening at Joe Retton Arena. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
