FSU Closes Out UVa-Wise, 75-62

WISE, Va. – Fairmont State closed out the University of Virginia's College at Wise, 75-62, on Monday night on the road at UVa-Wise's Prior Convocation Center.

Fairmont State (9-6, 6-3 MEC) was led by Jamel Morris with 27 points, five rebounds and four assists in the victory. Morris scored 15 of his 27 points in the second half to allow the Falcons to pull away. The only other FSU player to reach double figures was Shammgod Wells with 11 points. Caleb Davis also chipped in nine points after going 7-of-8 from the free throw line and Brandon Vega pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.

The Falcons opened the game shooting 36 percent from the field, making just 11-of-31 first half field goals. UVa-Wise shot 44 percent from the floor in the opening half to jump out to a 36-34 halftime lead.
In the second half, Fairmont State regained the lead early by shooting 50 percent from the floor and limiting the Cavs to just 23 percent from the floor. FSU also knocked down 18-of-23 free throw attempts in the final 20 minutes of the game.

For the game, Fairmont State held a 32-10 margin scoring in the paint and held a +10 margin on the boards. The teams combined for 50 fouls and 65 free throw attempts in the game. FSU knocked down 26-of-36 (72%) free throw attempts in the victory compared to 18-of-29 for UVa-Wise.

UVa-Wise was led by Brian Sydnor with 17 points and 15 rebounds while Philip Owens II finished with 13 points and a team-best five assists.

FSU will return to action next Saturday when No. 1 West Liberty visits Joe Retton Arena at 4 p.m.
