FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State held Urbana to -3 yards of total offense and allowed just four first downs in a 6-0 Mountain East Conference victory over Urbana on Saturday afternoon at a rainy and windy Urbana University Stadium.
The FSU defense set school records for total offense allowed (-3), fewest rushing yards allowed (-27) and tied a school record by allowing zero rushing first downs. It was also the first shutout by the FSU defense since Sept. 11, 2010, a 38-0 victory over Notre Dame College at home.
Fairmont State also dominated time of possession, controlling the ball for more than 40 minutes in the victory. The Falcons also ran 83 offensive snaps compared to just 38 for Urbana.
Offensively, the Falcons also had their first 100-yard rushing performance of the season in the win.
Terrell Charles rushed for 125 yards on 24 carries to lead the Falcons.
Austin White also chipped in 54 yards on 17 carries and
James Oliver totaled 51 yards on seven carries as the Falcons racked up 254 rushing yards on the afternoon.
Quarterback
Cooper Hibbs completed 11-of-24 pass attempts for 97 yards through the air and added 36 on the ground.
LaChristopher Lee hauled in seven receptions for 49 yards to lead the FSU receivers this afternoon.
Emanuel Ivey led the Fairmont State defense with six total tackles and a pair of sacks on the afternoon.
Jerry Iweh recorded an interception for FSU and
Marco Jones recovered a fumble on a bad snap by Urbana on a field-goal attempt in the third quarter. Urbana was also 0-for-10 on third downs in the game.
Johnny Dearstine scored the only points of the day, drilling home a 20-yard field goal attempt at the 9:33 mark of the first quarter after Charles rushed 37 yards down to the FSU 1 to set up the attempt. He wrapped up the scoring in the fourth quarter after capping a 10-play, 45-yard drive with a 28-yard field goal with 7:10 remaining in the game.
Dearstine is now tied with Alex Ashley for second in school history with 23 career made field goals.
Eric Pelfrey completed just 6-of-17 pass attempts for 24 yards and an interception for Urbana at quarterback. Trevon Saunders led UU in both rushing and receiving, hauling in two passes for 12 yards and rushing for 12 yards on his only carry of the game. D'Gary Wallace was all over the field for the Blue Knight defense, totaling 18 total tackles (14 solo) and a sack in the loss. Kevin Chapple also had a big day defensively for UU, racking up 12 tackles (nine solo) and a sack.
The Falcons will now have a short week before hosting West Virginia Wesleyan College on Thursday evening at Duvall-Rosier Field. Kickoff is set for 7:10 p.m.
