Hot-Shooting Falcons Roll Past Shaw, 95-69

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State had 13 players score and shot 66.7 percent from the field in the second half to run away with a 95-69 victory over Shaw University on Saturday evening to wrap up the 2015 Joe Retton Classic.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 2-0 on the season while Shaw falls to 0-2. West Virginia Wesleyan also picked-up an 83-76 overtime victory over Lincoln (PA) in the opening game of the day to give the Mountain East four wins inside Joe Retton Arena over the weekend.

Matt Bingaya scored a team-high 17 points, including a 9-for-9 performance from the foul line, and pulled down five rebounds to lead the Falcons. The Falcons also go 16 points from freshman point-guard Jason Jolly, 15 from Caleb Davis and 12 from Vonte Montgomery. Davis went 7-of-9 from the field and also forced three turnovers for the Falcons defensively. Shammgod Wells recorded a team-high five assists as FSU tallied assists on 20-of-34 made baskets.

For the game, the Falcons made 34-of-57 field goal attempts (59.6%) and their bench outscored the starting lineup, 55-40. FSU also scored over half of its points inside the paint, holding a 48-28 advantage over Shaw.

The game became very chippy in the closing minutes as 48 total fouls were called on the two teams, including a pair of technicals. The Falcons, however, were very good at the foul line, knocking-down 19-of-23 attempts. FSU also drilled 8-of-21 attempts from behind the arc, led by Chase Connor with a trio of three-pointers.

Shaw was limited to just 34.4 percent from the field offensively and was led by Joell Hopkins with 13 points and 10 rebounds. David Madol scored a team-best 18 points for the Bears and Larry Richardson added 11. SU also recorded just eight assists compared to 18 turnovers in the contest.

The Falcons will now be idle until next Saturday when West Virginia Wesleyan comes to town for a 4 p.m. tip to open Mountain East Conference play.
