FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Senior
Kaitlyn Witsaman drove home 14 kills and six digs to lead Fairmont State past the University of Virginia's College at Wise, 3-0, on Friday evening at Joe Retton Arena.
The Falcons recorded a .317 attacking percentage and held an 8-3 advantage in blocks to pick up the victory. FSU controlled the first and second sets from beginning to end, winning by scores of 25-17 and 25-20, respectively.
The third set, however, was very competitive as UVa-Wise used five-straight points to grab a 21-16 advantage late in the set. Fairmont State responded in a big way, though, scoring six-straight points with
Erin Harwood on the service line.
The rest of the set went back-and-forth until three-straight kills by the Falcons allowed FSU to hold-off the Cavs set-point and FSU took the deciding third set, 27-25.
In addition to Witsaman's performance,
Mackenzie Harrison and
Courtney Kress also reached double-figures with 10 kills apiece. Harrison was also strong around the net, tallying four total blocks (three solo).
Harwood notched a team-high 16 digs and
Megan Clerico added 14 to lead the Falcons defensively while
Jessica Furda passed out 41 assists in the victory.
Uva-Wise was led by Karley Allen with 12 kills and 13 digs and Amanda Auxier chipped 10 kills to lead the Cavs in the match. Chandler Rouse guided the UVa-Wise attack with 33 assists.
The Falcons will host Concord on senior day tomorrow afternoon starting at 1 p.m. at Joe Retton Arena.
