FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Wheeling Jesuit shot 64 percent from the field and controlled most of the second half to defeat Fairmont State, 88-70, on Thursday night at Joe Retton Arena. The loss haults Fairmont State's winning streak at nine games.
Fairmont State (17-7, 14-4 MEC) was led by
Jamel Morris with 13 points and a team-high five assists.
Shammgod Wells (12),
Nick Harney (10) and
Thomas Wimbush (10) also reached double figures for the Falcons. Harney led Fairmont State on the glass with six rebounds.
The Falcons managed just 41 percent from the field and 32 percent from three in the loss. Charleston nailed 10-of-20 (50%) attempts from behind the arc and held a 42-30 advantage scoring in the paint. Despite being out-rebounded by three (32-29), the Falcons pulled down 13 offensive rebounds and scored 13 second-chance points.
Wheeling Jesuit made 11-of-12 field goal attempts in the opening 11 minutes of the game before settling for a 41-35 advantage at the break. Pat Moseh scored a team-high 11 points in the opening half for the Cardinals and WJU shot 67 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Harney led FSU in the opening half with 10 points and five rebounds.
The Falcons shot just 37 percent from the field in the second half and the Cardinals continued to shooting over 60 percent to run away with the 88-70 victory and have now won eight of their last nine games.
Wheeling Jesuit (14-8, 10-7 MEC) had a pair of 20-point scorers, led by Eric Siefert with 24 while Moseh chipped in 21 points and a game-best eight assists. Haywood Highsmith (15) and Kyle Ritz (10) also scored in double figures for the Cardinals.
The Falcons will now travel to No. 8 West Liberty for a 4 p.m. tip against the Hilltoppers on Saturday afternoon at the ASRC.
