CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Fairmont State fell to Wheeling Jesuit, 85-76, on Thursday night in the quarterfinal round of the 2015 Mountain East Conference Championship. The Cardinals shot 57.7 percent from the floor and scored 50 points in the paint to pick up the victory.
The Falcons (22-8) were led by senior
Hallie Gunnoe with 27 points and five rebounds. Gunnoe scored 1,000 points in her FSU career with her performance in tonight's game and scored 1,018 in her college basketball career. Fellow seniors
Hailey Garrett (15),
Emily Lohr (14) and
Tess Zufall (12) also reached double figures for the Falcons. Zufall drained four three-pointers and Garrett and Lohr eached pulled down seven boards to lead FSU on the glass. FSU was limited to just 41 percent from the floor.
Wheeling Jesuit (19-8) will now advance to the semifinals on Saturday afternoon when they meet West Liberty at noon inside the Charleston Civic Center. The Cardinals were led by Jaila Bryant with 23 points after going 10-of-13 from the floor. Bryant also pulled down seven rebounds and passed out seven assists. Lydia Hyburg (19), Mariah Callen (12) and Jaana Motton (10) also reached double figures for the Cardinals. Taylor Lubinsky led WJU on the glass with eight rebounds to go along with seven points.
The Cardinals held a 35-33 advantage in rebounding and got 20 points from their bench in the win. FSU pulled down 14 offensive rebounds and had 14 second chance points.
Wheeling Jesuit shot 65 percent from the floor in the opening half to pull out to a 39-31 advantage at the break. The first half remained close for the first eight minutes until a 10-0 run in less than three minutes gave the Cardinals their first double-digit lead of the evening. Bryant scored 10 points to lead the Cardinals in the first half while Gunnoe led FSU with 10. FSU was limited to just 38 percent from the floor in the opening half.
In the second half, FSU cut Jesuit's halftime lead to just three points, 41-38, at the 18:02 to mark. Over the next four minutes, however, Wheeling pushed its lead back to 10 by going on a 13-6 run. FSU was able to cut the advantage back to seven points on five occassions in the closing minutes of the game but each time the Cardinals had an answer at the opposite end and closed out the 85-76 win. Garrett fouled out of the game with nine minutes remaining in the game and Gunnoe played a majority of the second half with four fouls.
