Lady Falcons Streak Ends At Six; Fall To NDC

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State women's basketball team dropped its first game since Dec. 5, falling to Notre Dame College, 77-63, on Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Joe Retton Arena.

With the loss, Fairmont State's six-game winning streak ends as the Falcons slip to 11-4 overall and 5-4 in the league. Notre Dame improves to 9-6 overall and 6-3 in MEC games.

With both teams top player in foul trouble in the opening half (Makenzie White - FSU, Martha Nagbe - NDC), Notre Dame was able to push a seven-point first quarter lead to a 12-point advantage at the break (39-27). Nagbe scored nine points in the opening quarter before picking up her second foul at the 1:32 mark, sending her to the bench for the remainder of the half. Lauren Landenderfer stepped up in Nagbe's absense scoring 12 first-half points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field.

The Falcons turned the ball over 28 times in the loss, including 16 in the opening half to help NDC build their 12-point lead going into the locker room.

Katie Nunan (8) and Amanda Ruffner (7) led the FSU offense in the opening half as the Falcons made just 1-of-5 shots from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes of action.

With Notre Dame holding a 16-point lead at the 8:58 mark of the third, FSU went on a 10-0 run, sparked by threes from Emily Puskarich and Gabrielle Etter to cut the lead to 45-39 with 5:44 remaining the the third. However, an 8-2 spurt by NDC push its lead back to double-figures heading into the fourth and final quarter.

Trailing by 11 (58-47), at the start of the fourth, Fairmont State scored the first two baskets of the period to trim the lead back to seven but NDC responded and didn't allow FSU to get any closer the rest of the way, wrapping up a 77-63 win.

White led the Falcons with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists. Ruffner (13), Etter (11) and Nunan (10) also reached double figures for Fairmont State. Despite losing by 14 points, the Falcons outshot NDC, finishing the game with a 51-percent field-goal percentage (25-of-49).

Notre Dame College shot 49.1 percent from the field (28-of-57) and scored 22 points-off turnovers and 14 on the fast-break. FSU scored just two points on the fast break.

Langenderfer finished with a game-high 22 points to lead Notre Dame in the victory. Nagbe chipped in 15 points depsite battling foul trouble and Celine Mangan added 10 to finish in double figures for NDC. Mangan also passed out a team-high four assists in the win.

The Falcons will return to action on Monday evening when Urbana comes to town for a 7:30 p.m. tip at Joe Retton Arena.
