FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State held off a late surge by Bowie State on Saturday evening to pick up a 100-97 victory over the Bulldogs on the second day of the Joe Retton Classic, presented by McDonald's.

The Falcons, who led by as many as 19 at the 6:36 mark of the second half, turned the ball over five times in the final 6:36 of the game and were outscored 29-13 during the stretch. However, a 6-for-6 performance from the free throw line and a layup by
Vonte Montgomery in the final minute of the game helped the Falcons fend off the Bulldogs.

In total, the Falcons turned the ball over 23 times on the evening. Bowie State held a slight advantage in the category but also turned the ball over 20 times.

The Falcons were led by
Thomas Wimbush with 21 points and 16 rebounds, going 8-of-12 from the field.
Jason Jolly also recorded his second-straight 20-point scoring performance with 21 points in the win. The Falcons also got 18 points from
Vonte Montgomery and 10 from
Matt Bingaya.
Shammgod Wells once against led the Falcons in assists with eight. The FSU offense recorded 19 assists on 37 made baskets.

Both teams shot extremely well from the field, with FSU connecting on nearly 53 percent of its field goals (37-of-70). Bowie State was just under 50 percent from the field at 49.3 percent (33-of-67). The Falcons also scored over half their points in the paint, holding a 54-42 scoring advantage in the post.

Bowie State was led by Ahmaad Wilson with 23 points and five rebounds in the loss. The Bulldogs also got 19 points from Omari George, 18 from Dayshawn Wells, 12 from Michael Briscoe and 10 from Enuoma Ebinum.

Fairmont State will return to Joe Retton Arena on Tuesday evening when Findlay (OH) comes to town for a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m.
