Blue Knights Edge Falcons Late, 83-81

URBANA, Ohio -- Urbana rallied in the final minute of the game to down Fairmont State, 83-81, on Thursday evening in Mountain East Conference action at the Grimes Center.
 
The loss is Fairmont's fourth in a row and drops FSU to 15-8 overall and 9-8 in league games. Urbana improves to 9-12 overall and 8-9 in the MEC.
 
Five players reached double-figures for the Falcons, led by Amanda Ruffner with 24 points and nine rebounds. Katie Nunan also chipped in 15 points, draining a trio of threes and Gabrielle Etter, Emily Puskarich and Deidra Combs also scored 12 points apiece.
 
Both teams shot 49 percent from the field, but the Falcons held a 10-4 advantage in three-pointers. The Falcons went 10-of-20 from behind the arc. However, FSU struggled from the free throw line, making 15-of-22 attempts compared to 9-of-9 for UU.
 
Urbana also placed five players in double-figures, led by Tori Purk with 21 points down low for the Blue Knights. Stefanie Davis and Jazmyn Haley each added 18 points and Haley added 11 rebounds for the double-double. Davis just missed a double-double by passing out a team-high nine assists to go with her 18 points.
 
UU dominated the specialty stats, holding a 60-28 advantage in the paint, a 19-15 margin in points-off turnovers, a 17-9 advantage in second-chance points and a 10-2 margin on the fast-break.
 
In the closing seconds of the game with FSU holding an 80-77 advantage, Kennedy Boggs went to the basket and finished to make it a one-point game with 16 seconds remaining. Nunan was fouled on the next FSU possession and went 1-of-2 from the line to push the FSU lead back to a basket at 81-79.
 
On the next Urbana possession, Boggs once again drove the paint for the score, tying the game at 81 apiece. On the ensuing inbounds pass, Boggs came up with a steal for UU and found Davis near the basket, where the Falcons were whistled for the foul. Davis buried the free throws with three ticks remaining and Urbana survived for the win.
 
The Falcons trailed by as many as 10 with 8:14 remaining in the third before back-to-back threes by Etter and Puskarich changed momentum and cut the UU lead to just four (44-40). The Falcons continued to battle back and eventually took the lead with 50 seconds remaining in the quarter after a layup by Ruffner.
 
The teams traded one-possession leads throughout the fourth quarter before the Urbana wrapped up the win at the free throw line with three-seconds remaining.
 
FSU will remain in Ohio for a 1 p.m. tip against Notre Dame College on Saturday afternoon.
