FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Deidra Combs and
Amanda Ruffner each scored 16 points to lead Fairmont State to an opening round victory over Concord, 74-63, on Tuesday evening at Joe Retton Arena to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 2016 Mountain East Conference Tournament.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 19-10 overall and will face fourth-seeded Glenville State in the MEC quarters on Thursday night. Tip is set for 8:15 p.m. Concord's season comes to an end with a record of 5-24.
Combs shot 8-of-11 from the field and added five rebounds in the victory. Ruffner was 5-of-7 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
Gabrielle Etter (14),
Katie Nunan (12) and
Emily Puskarich (11) also reached double-figures for FSU. Etter passed out a team-best five assists.
Fairmont State shot 50 percent from the field (29-of-58), including 32 points in the paint. The Falcons also held a 35-31 advantage on the boards.
Defensively, the Falcons limited Concord to just 41 percent from the field and 36 percent from three. The Mountain Lions did drain 10 three-pointers on 28 attempts and tallied 17 assists in the loss.
CU was led by Danielle Catron with 19 points and seven rebounds on the evening. Kylie Molisee recorded a double-double for the Mountain Lions with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
