FSU Women Fall In MEC Semifinals

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Fairmont State's 2015-16 season came to an end on Saturday afternoon, falling to No. 17 and top-seeded West Liberty, 53-40, in the semifinal round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament presented by GoMart at the Charleston Civic Center.

The Falcons finished the season with a 20-11 record while West Liberty advanced to tomorrow's MEC Tournament Championship Game and improved to 27-3 on the season.

West Liberty's Liz Flowers took over a close game in the first half and finished the game with 34 points and eight rebounds, going 12-of-24 from the field (including five three-pointers).

Both teams shot just 33 percent from the field and less than 26 percent from behind the arc as the game was a defensive struggle for a majority of the afternoon. West Liberty, however, held a 41-33 advantage on the boards (including 13-4 on the offensive end) and a 26-8 scoring margin in the paint.

Senior Katie Nunan wrapped up her career with 16 points to lead the Falcons. Amanda Ruffner chipped in 12 and Deidra Combs finished with 10 points, six rebounds, four blocks and two steals.

Flowers was the only WLU player to reach double-figures as Kierra Simpson and Kailee Howe each chipped in six points apiece. Simpson struggled from the floor most of the afternoon, but added 16 rebounds, six blocks and two steals. Howe also added nine rebounds and six assists to her six points.
