Fairmont State Falls At No. 10 Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio -- Fairmont State suffered a heartbreaking 84-82 loss at No. 10 Findlay (OH) on Wednesday evening in non-conference action.

Findlay's Taren Sullivan dropped in a layup with 18 seconds remaining to give the Oilers the lead, and then Fairmont's putback attempt with just second remaining rolled out to help Findlay survive with the win. Fairmont's Andrew Emrick made two clutch layups in the final 61 seconds of the game to give the Falcons a lead in the final minute before Sullivan's game winner.

With Fairmont State trailing by 11 at the 9:05 mark of the second half (69-58), the Falcons came out of a timeout and went on an 8-0 run over the next 1:08 to pull within three points. Caleb Davis and Kenzie Melko drained huge threes during the stretch.

From that point, the margin stayed within single digits as Findlay nursed a narrow lead until the final minute of the game when Emrick put Fairmont State in front with 24 seconds remaining.

Fairmont State got a team-high 24 points and six assists from Jason Jolly - 16 of which came in the opening half. The Falcons also got 10 points from Emrick and nine apiece from Vonte Montgomery, R.J. Hutcherson and Melko. Melko also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for the Falcons.

The Falcons shot over 53 percent from the field (32-of-60) and 48 percent from three (14-of-29) in the loss. The Falcons also had a 39-30 rebounding advantage.

However, Fairmont turned the ball over 16 times, compared to just six for the home-standing Oilers. Findlay scored 20 points off turnovers.

Sullivan turned in a game-high 27 points and 11 rebounds to lead Findlay in the victory. The Oilers also got 14 points and five rebounds from Elijah Kahlig, and 11 points apiece from Martyce Kimbrough and Aaron Overhister.

Findlay shot 48.6 percent from the field (36-of-74), but managed just 5-of-17 from behind the arc.

Fairmont State will now open conference play on Saturday evening with a 7:30 tip against the University of Charleston.
