Laskody's Layup Lifts Fairmont State Past WJU, 55-53

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Rachel Laskody dropped in a layup for Fairmont State with two seconds remaining in the game to propel the Falcons to a 55-53 win over Wheeling Jesuit on Wednesday evening at Joe Retton Arena. 
 
Fairmont State limited Wheeling Jesuit to just four points in the fourth quarter of play and took its first lead of the game on Laskody's layup with just two ticks remaining on the clock. Wheeling's last field goal of the game came at the 5:54 mark of the fourth quarter.
 
The Falcons shot 41 percent from the field, including a 6-of-15 performance (40.0%) from behind the arc in the win. However, Fairmont's strongest performance of the day was on the defensive end of the floor, limiting Wheeling Jesuit to just 34 percent from the field and forcing 18 turnovers. The Falcons scored 12 points off turnovers, all of which came on the fast break.
 
Sierra Kotchman scored 14 points for Fairmont State (4-4, 1-4 MEC) with Brooke Kurucz and Kelli Jo Harrison each netting 12 in the win. Harrison grabbed 11 rebounds to finish the evening with her third double-double of the season. Ozge Yarga dished out seven assists to help guide Fairmont State's offense in the victory.
 
The Falcons passed out 14 assists on 21 made baskets.
 
Chenelle Moore led the effort for Wheeling Jesuit (2-6, 1-4 MEC) with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Monica Burns chipped in 12 points in the loss.
 
Wheeling Jesuit held a commanding 41-28 advantage on the glass.
 
The Falcons will now travel to West Liberty for a 5:30 p.m. tip at the ASRC on Saturday evening.
