GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Glenville State clinched at least a share of the Mountain East Conference Regular Season Championship with its 87-78 win over Fairmont State on Thursday evening inside the Waco Center.
Glenville's win, paired with Notre Dame's win over Wheeling Jesuit (74-59) allowed the Pioneers to clinch a share of the conference crown.
The Pioneers improved to 23-4 overall and 17-4 in the MEC. FSU slips to 16-11 overall and 13-8 in the league.
The Pioneers used an 11-3 run to end the opening half and took a 42-28 advantage into the locker room. In the second half, GSC quickly pushed its lead out to 19 at the 7:35 mark and led by double-digits until the 25-second mark of the fourth quarter when a pair of
Deidra Combs free throws cut the Pioneer lead to just nine.
Fairmont State managed just 10 first-half field goals and tuned the ball over 16 times in the opening 20 minutes of action to allow the Pioneers to open up a 14-point half time advantage.
For the game, FSU outshot Glenville State 44.8-40.0 percent, but couldn't overcome 26 turnovers on the evening. The Pioneers also held a 10-2 advantage in made three-pointers.
Amanda Ruffner scored a game-high 25 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Falcons.
Deidra Combs finished just one point shy with 24 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Paris McLeod led the Pioneers with 22 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals. Erika Toney (14) and Julie Bishop (11) also reached double-figures for Glenville State.
The Pioneers put up 41 three-pointers in the win, shooting just 24.4 percent from behind the arc.
Fairmont State will return home on Saturday afternoon for senior day against Shepherd. Tip is set for 2 p.m. at Joe Retton Arena. The FSU women will honor six seniors following its 2 p.m. matchup with the Rams.
