No. 1 Falcons Hold Off Glenville State, 86-81

FSU clinches a share of the 2017 MEC Regular Season Championship

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Jason Jolly went 10-for-10 from the free throw line in the final 42 seconds of Fairmont State's 86-81 victory over Glenville State on Thursday evening to help the Falcons clinch at least a share of the 2017 Mountain East Conference Regular Season Championship.

With a win over Shepherd on Saturday afternoon inside Joe Retton Arena, the No. 1-ranked Falcons can win their first outright regular season championship since the 1996 season.

With the win, FSU improves to 26-1 overall and 20-1 in league play. The Pioneers fall to 11-14 overall and 8-13 in the MEC.

The Falcons clung to a 42-41 halftime lead as neither team was able to gain any momentum virtually all evening. FSU shot 56.7 percent from the field in the opening half, but was outrebounding 21-13, including a 7-2 margin on the offensive glass. GSC shot 48 percent from the field in the opening half.

Fairmont State led for the final 17:30 minutes of the game, but never by more than 10 points. With FSU leading by nine (76-67) following a Thomas Wimbush free throw at the 1:14 mark of the second half, Glenville State answered quickly with a layup by Jalon Plummer and a three by Jon Dunmyer to close the FSU advantage to just four (76-72).

However, Glenville's comeback plans were halted by a flawless performance by Jolly at the free throw line in the final minute of the game. Jolly finished the evening with 14 points and four assists, but nearly all of his damage came from the foul line as he went just 1-of-10 from the field and 11-of-12 from the charity stripe.

Matt Bingaya scored a team-high 21 points to go along with six rebounds and four steals. Thomas Wimbush recorded a double-double for FSU with 18 points and 10 boards.

Shammgod Wells also chipped in eight points and passed out three assists, allowing the senior to tie Brian Tristani for the all-time school record of 525 career assists. Wells will attempt to break the record on Senior Day this Saturday.

Four players reached double-figures for Glenville State, led by Plummer with 16 points.

FSU will wrap up the regular season on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day against Shepherd. Tip is set for 4 p.m. inside Joe Retton Arena.
