URBANA, Ohio -- A fast start allowed Fairmont State to earn a split with Urbana, 13-5, 4-2, in Mountain East Conference Northern Division action on Sunday afternoon at Blue Knight Field in Urbana.

In the first game of the afternoon, the Falcons plated 13 runs on 16 hits to roll to a 13-5 series opening victory. Fairmont State scored in six of the seven innings during game one on Sunday.

The Falcons recorded 16 hits in 36 at-bats during game one, with seven players recording multiple hits in the win. FSU was led by
Ben Myers, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.
Greg Yaksich drove in four run for the Falcons and
Tyler Krantz added a pair. Myers, Yaksich and
Troy Kifer each recorded doubles in the victory.

In addition to the 16 hits by the Falcons, Urbana also committee four errors in the FSU win.

Michael Stout (7-3) pitched six innings for the Falcons to earn the win, striking out three and allowing just two earned runs.

Fairmont's bats were not as effective in game two, as both teams struggled from the plate and Urbana pitcher Adam Guay (5-1) pitched a complete game, striking out five and allowing just two runs in the 4-2 Blue Knights victory.

In game two, the Falcons managed just seven hits and didn't cross home plate until the top of the eight inning with Urbana already holding a 4-0 lead.
Jacob Whitmore and
Johnny Kesling each drove in runs for the Falcons in the top of the eight to make the final score of game two, 4-2, in favor of Urbana.

Austin Norman was the only FSU batter to record multiple hits in game two, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Yaksich recorded the only extra-base hit of game two for the Falcons, a triple to right center in the top of the fourth.

Matt Maiers dropped to 4-3 on the season despite a solid effort on the hill for the Falcons. Maiers allowed just five hits and fanned two in five and two-thirds innings of work.

Fairmont State will remain in Urbana for games three and four of the series on Monday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Blue Knight Field.

With a sweep of Monday's games, the Falcons would move into a tie with West Liberty (16-8) for second place in the MEC North. The Falcons went to 22-18 overall and 14-8 in the league following Sunday's doubleheader split.
