FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State salvaged a split with West Virginia State on Sunday afternoon during senior day by taking a 7-5 win in game two of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Duvall-Rosier Field. WVSU took game one, 8-0, in five innings.
Prior to Sunday's doubleheader, the Fairmont State softball program honored three seniors who played their final game at Duvall-Rosier Field. Fairmont's senior class includes Abbi Fetty,
Samantha Hoban and Whitley Monagn.
Despite the split, FSU softball missed the cut for next week's Mountain East Conference Softball Tournament, finishing the year with a record of 19-31 overall and 12-20 in the league. The Falcons lost a tiebreaker with Urbana and finished fifth in the MEC Northern Division.
With FSU trailing 5-4 in game two, the Falcons plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good.
Beth Cook started the scoring for FSU with an RBI single to left field that brought home senior
Samantha Hoban.
Jenny Stubbs broke the 5-5 tie later in the inning by hitting an RBI single up the middle to bring home
Addie Fullen.
Hannah Absalom plated the final run of the inning during the next at-bat when her sacrifice-fly brought home Cook, pushing the final score to 7-5 in favor of Fairmont State. Cook drove in three runs during the victory, also bringing home a pair in the bottom of the first on a single up the middle.
Senior
Whitley Mongan also drove in two runs in the bottom of the second on a double to left center that brought home
Carly Clarke and Stubbs.
Absalom improved to 8-15 on the season, pitching a complete game to lead the Falcons to a split on senior day.
In game one, West Virginia State's Emily Thompson pitched a no-hitter to lead the Yellow Jackets to an 8-0 five-inning victory over the Falcons. Thompson allowed just one base runner the entire afternoon when hitting Fairmont's
Abby Burgess with a pitch in the bottom of the fifth. Thompson stuck out five batters in the no-hit performance.
