BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State sent its six seniors out in style by sweeping division-leading Shepherd on Thursday afternoon to open a four-game series with the Rams at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex.
With the win, Fairmont State (28-20, 20-10 MEC) will now have the opportunity to play for the Mountain East Conference Northern Division Championship on Sunday afternoon in Shepherdstown. With a sweep of the Rams, the Falcons will win the Regular Season Division Championship. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
Game 1
In game one, senior
Fraser Brown closed out Fairmont's come-from-behind victory by hitting a two-run home run to center field to give the Falcons a walk-off 11-10 win to open the day. Brown entered the game in the bottom of the seventh to pinch hit for
Greg Yaksich.
Shepherd appeared to be well on its way to a victory in game one, leading 10-5 entering the bottom of the seventh.
However, Fairmont's offense came alive in the final inning of the game – getting RBI singles from
Darrin Zombro and
Austin Norman and getting a two-RBI double from
Johnny Kesling to pull the Falcons within one run (10-9).
After a strikeout by Shepherd to grab its second out of the inning, Brown delivered on senior day by crushing his second pitch over the center field fence for a two-run home run that ended the game.
Kesling was unstoppable at the plate in game one, hitting a pair of home runs, a triple and a double – driving in six runs in the victory. A total of 10 FSU players recorded a hit in game one.
Michael Stout struck out 12 batters in a no decision for the Falcons on the hill – pitching six innings after getting the start. Stout recorded double-digit strikeouts for just the third time in his career.
Game 2
The Falcons carried their momentum from game one into game two and grabbed a 3-0 advantage in the first inning of play.
Following his walk-off in game one, Brown put the Falcons on the board in game two with a singe into center field that brought home Norman and
Troy Kifer.
Brooks Carr pushed the Fairmont advantage to 3-0 later in the inning with a single to right field that brought home
Jacob Whitmore.
Shepherd plated its only run of game two in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly – cutting Fairmont's lead to 3-1.
However, Norman hit Fairmont's fourth home run of the day in the bottom of the second inning, allowing the Falcons to re-gain their three-run advantage. Kifer wrapped up the scoring in the night cap with a RBI single in the fourth to plate
Scott Hessler from second base.
Tyler Holt (2-2) got the win in game two, allowing just one run on seven hits – striking out six batters.
The teams combined for 41 hits and six home runs in Thursday's doubleheader.
