WHEELING, W.Va. – Fairmont State survived a late rally to pull out a 62-60 road win over Wheeling Jesuit on Wednesday evening at the McDonough Center. The Falcons maintained a comfortable 10-point lead with 7:08 left in the fourth quarter when Monica Burns hit a layup for the Cardinals, sparking a 15-6 run that pulled WJU within a single point with just 14 seconds remaining.
Clinging to a 58-57 lead, three free throws by the Falcons gave Fairmont State some breathing room before Burns drained a three with five seconds on the clock to once again cut the FSU lead to just one (61-60).
Ozge Yarga sank a free throw for Fairmont State with four seconds left and Wheeling Jesuit wouldn't get a final shot attempt off, making the final margin, 62-60, in favor of Fairmont State.
Fairmont State made just seven field goals in the second half of Wednesday's game, including just two in the fourth quarter of play. FSU shot nearly 47 percent from the field in the first half of play, compared to just 23 percent in the final 20 minutes of action (7-of-30).
However, Fairmont State did drain 14 of its 19 second half free throw attempts to help hold off the Cardinals.
The win, which allowed Fairmont State to improve to .500 on the season (9-9, 5-8 MEC), was the first Mountain East Conference road win of the season for the Falcons. The win also gave the Falcons the season sweep over the Cardinals, as FSU also picked up a 55-53 win over WJU back on Dec. 6 in Fairmont.
Sierra Kotchman scored 21 points to lead all scorers in the victory.
Brooke Kurucz netted 14 and
Kelli Jo Harrison grabbed 14 rebounds to aid the effort. Point guard
Ozge Yarga also chipped in eight points to go with four assists in the win.
Chenelle Moore scored 18 points and grabbed a game-high 20 rebounds for Wheeling Jesuit (8-11, 6-7 MEC) in the setback. Cassie Stein netted 15 while Mariah Callen and Burns tallying 11 and 10 points, respectively, to provide a balanced offensive attack for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals managed just 32.3 percent from the field (20-of-62) and made just 14-of-25 free throw attempts (56%) in the loss.
Fairmont State will now return to action on Sunday afternoon when the Falcons host West Liberty in the MEC Game of the Week. Tip is set for 2:30 p.m. inside Joe Retton Arena.
