FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State scored on its first six possessions of the game and racked up 570 yards of total offense in a dominating 52-9 Homecoming victory over Glenville State in the annual "Battle for the Bit."
With the victory, Fairmont State retains the "bit" for the fifth-consecutive season and improves to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in Mountain East Conference play this season. GSC slips to 3-5 overall and 3-4 in league play.
Takwan Crews-Naylor paced the Fairmont State offense in the victory by completing 17-of-21 pass attempts for 301 yards and four touchdowns, each of which came in the opening half of the game. Three of Crews-Naylor's touchdown passes were from 30-or-more yards out, including a 77-yard strike to
Shawn Harris, a 53-yarder to
Javon Hayes, and a 31-yard connection with
Alquawn Vickers.
Each of those receivers recorded at least 70 yards through the air in the victory, led by Harris with three catches for 125 yards and a score. Hayes added five receptions for 72 yards, and Vickers chipped in four receptions for 78 yards.
The Falcons also rolled up 268 yards on the ground, including a team-high 119 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns from
Khalik Hamlin.
Tyree Randolph also chipped in nine carries for 53 yards and a score, and
Rakeem Darden totaled 29 yards on four carries and also crossed the goal line. Five different running backs carried the football on the afternoon.
The Falcons were just as impressive on the defensive side of the ball, limiting the Pioneers to just 198 yards of total offense, including 103 through the air and 95 on the ground. The Pioneers also managed just 10 first downs and went just 2-of-10 on third-down attempts.
Fairmont State forced three turnovers in the opening half, including two on special teams, and each led to points for the Falcon offense.
The Fairmont State defense was on the field for just over 21 minutes in the game, and got a team-high four tackles from
Jerry Iweh,
Trevon Shorts,
Jordan Schaeffer and Ekuoe Aziaba.
Brandon Ruffin picked off a pass for the Fairmont State defense, and Malachi McMillian and
Dalton Dempsey recovered fumbles on special teams.
Glenville quarterback Jaylen McNair completed just 10-of-22 pass attempts for 103 yards and a TD. Gary Bacon hauled in the only TD of the game for the Pioneers, a 37-yard score in the third quarter.
J'Quan Anderson led the Pioneers on the ground with 91 yards on 18 carries. Glenville State running back Mario Pender, the MEC offensive player of the week in each of the last two weeks, missed this afternoon's game due to injury.
Samuel Thomas led the Pioneer defense with a team-high 13 stops, including 11 solo and one for a loss.
Fairmont State will return to action next Saturday with a road trip to West Virginia State. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
