Fairmont State Downs Glenville In Regular Season Finale

GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- Fairmont State women's soccer wrapped up the 2018 regular season with a 4-0 victory over Glenville State in Mountain East Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Morris Stadium.
 
With the victory, Fairmont State wraps up the regular season with an 8-6-3 mark, including a 6-5-2 record in MEC play. The Falcons will now prepare for their first-ever Mountain East Conference Tournament appearance on Tuesday afternoon at West Liberty. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
 
In the regular season finale, Fairmont State held a 28-5 advantage in shots, including a 14-4 margin in shots on goal. The Falcons also held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
 
Fairmont State senior Samantha Buffey broke the scoreless tie in the 28th minute to give the Falcons a 1-0 advantage. Nine minutes later, Buffey recorded an assist by setting up a goal by Cameryn Ciresi at the 36:05 mark of the opening half.
 
Louise Welch wrapped up the scoring in the opening half on an unassisted goal at the 38:29 mark to make the score 3-0 at the half.
 
Freshman Kaitlin Smith wrapped up the scoring in the 53rd minute to make the final score 4-0.
 
Buffey, Ciresi and Smith scored goals for the first time this season in the victory. Welch netted her fifth goal of the season.
 
The Fairmont State women's soccer team wrapped up a historic regular season on Sunday afternoon, recording their first-ever winning record in program history (8-6-3). The Falcons also set program records for wins (8), conference wins (6), goals (33) and assists (28).
 
Fairmont State also surrendered just 15 goals this season, as goalkeeper Isabelle Vaccari recorded six shutouts on the season. Vaccari recorded 71 saves this season.
 
Tuesday's MEC Tournament matchup at West Liberty will be the third of the season between the programs. The Falcons and Hilltoppers battled to a scoreless draw back on Sept. 16 in Fairmont, before West Liberty scored a late goal on Oct. 18 to down the Falcons 1-0 on the hilltop.
