FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State outscored Lock Haven 23-16 in the fourth quarter and outlasted the Bald Eagles for its first victory of the season, 86-79, on Saturday afternoon at Joe Retton Arena.
The Falcons (1-1) trailed by four points (72-68) at the 5:41 mark of the fourth quarter before outscoring LHU 18-7 during the final five minutes of play.
The game featured nine ties and four lead changes and Fairmont State led by as many as 11 points at the 6:03 mark of the third quarter (47-36).
Sierra Kotchman led the Falcons in the victory with 29 points, six rebounds and two assists. Kotchman drained four 3-pointers and knocked down 11-of-14 attempts from the free throw line.
Brooke Kurucz also chipped in 19 points and four rebounds, and
Kamrin Weimer added 16 points and five boards. Kurucz went 6-of-9 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the win.
Fairmont State shot 46 percent from the field and drained 21-of-27 free throw attempts, compared to just 39.7 percent from the field (29-of-73) and a 12-of-21 performance from the free throw line by Lock Haven.
Bink Redman and Rileigh Devine each bucketed 17 points for LHU in the setback. The Bald Eagles also dominated the glass with a 51-33 rebounding advantage, which included 18 offensive rebounds.
Fairmont State will return to action on Wednesday evening with a non-conference matchup against Gannon University at Joe Retton Arena. Tip is set for 6 p.m.
