FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State drained 14 three-pointers and shot 63 percent in the second half to defeat West Virginia State, 94-76, on Monday night in Mountain East Conference action at Joe Retton Arena.
The win is Fairmont State's fourth in a row and allowed the Falcons to improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in MEC play this season.
A three by Glen Abram as time expired in the opening half put WVSU up 36-33 at the break. West Virginia State pushed its lead to 10 (47-37) at the 16:27 mark of the second half before a 24-7 run in just over five minutes put the Falcons in front, 61-54, with 11:20 remaining. Fairmont State was 8-of-9 from deep during that stretch with all points coming from three-pointers.
Jason Jolly had a trio of three-pointers during the stretch while
Vonte Montgomery and
Cole VonHandorf each drained two apiece.
Fairmont State continued to push its lead to as many as 21 with 1:10 remaining in the second half, before wrapping up the 94-76 triumph.
Jolly led the Falcons with a game-high 28 points to go with four assists. Jolly, who was named the MEC Player of the Week earlier this afternoon for his performance against UC on Saturday, scored 23 of his points in the second half, going 7-of-10 from behind the arc in the final 20 minutes of play. It was the fourth 20-point scoring performance of the season for Jolly, including his third in a row.
Montgomery added 21 points, six rebounds and three assists, with 19 of his points coming in the second half. VonHandorf also chipped in 16 for the Falcons in the win.
Troy Cantrell grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
For the game, Fairmont State shot 52 percent from the field and out-rebounded West Virginia State, 42-31. The Falcons also made 18-of-37 attempts from behind the arc, including 14-of-22 attempts in the second half.
Pat Johnson-Agwu netted 26 for West Virginia State (2-2, 1-1 MEC), while Gus Stone added 19.
The Falcons will now be idle until Wednesday, Nov. 28 when Glenville State comes to Joe Retton Arena for a 7:30 p.m. MEC showdown.
