Falcons Take Down Unbeaten Glenville State, 98-77

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State outscored Glenville State 59-33 in the second half and rolled to a 98-77 Mountain East Conference victory over the Pioneers on Wednesday evening at Joe Retton Arena. The win snaps Fairmont State's three-game losing streak and gives the Falcons their first conference win of the season.
 
The conference regular season loss is Glenville State's first since Feb. 4, 2017 and halted the Pioneers' 30-game conference winning streak. The loss is also the first of the season for the Pioneers, who fell to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in league play.
 
Fairmont State improves to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in league play. The win over Glenville State is the first for Fairmont State since Nov. 21, 2016, a 96-92 win for the Falcons at Joe Retton Arena.

The Pioneers led 44-39 at the break, but the Falcons came out hot in the third quarter with a 16-4 run in the first five minutes. Brooke Kurucz sparked the charge with seven points during that span.
 
Leading 69-61 after the third quarter, the Falcons put together another strong start in the fourth quarter with a 16-3 run in the first four minutes. Fairmont State was 6-of-9 from the field during that span, including 4-of-5 from deep. Sierra Kotchman provided the spark this time with nine points on a trio of 3-pointers.

Fairmont State finished the game shooting 61 percent from the field, compared to just 33 percent for Glenville State. The Falcons also recorded assists on 23 of the team's 36 field goals in the win.
 
The shooting performance was by far Fairmont's best of the season, as the Falcons entered the game shooting just 38.0 percent from the field and 17.4 percent from behind the arc.
 
The Falcons shot a sizzling 11-of-18 from three in the win (.611).

Kotchman finished with 28 on the night, going 6-of-7 from three-point range. Rachel Laskody also added a career-high 27 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots in the win. Kurucz stuffed the stat sheet with 26 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
 
Ozge Yarga also recorded a career-high with 14 points and eight assists.

Courtney Davis scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Pioneers. Donasja Scott came off the bench to add 14 points.
 
Emily Stoller, who led the league in scoring coming into the game at 26.8 points per game, was limited to just 10 points on 4-of-17 from the field.
 
The Falcons held Glenville State 40 points below their season scoring average, which was 117.4 points per game through the first five games of the season.
 
The Falcons will now prepare for their first road trip of the season on Saturday at West Virginia Wesleyan. Tip is set for 2 p.m. at the Rockefeller Center.
