FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State shot over 60 percent from the field and drained 15 three-pointers in an 86-70 victory over California (PA) on Friday night at Joe Retton Arena on day one of the Joe Retton Classic.
After Cal pulled within three points (61-58) at the 8:46 mark of the second half following a jumper by Nathaniel Chambers, Fairmont State went on a 13-2 run to regain control of the game with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. The stretch was aided by a pair of threes from
R.J. Hutcherson and a three from
Cole VonHandorf.
From that point, Fairmont State held a double-digit lead the remainder of the game and led by as many as 20 with 1:49 remaining.
VonHandorf led the Falcons with 18 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. The sophomore shot 6-of-8 from the field and 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Kenzie Melko (17), Hutcherson (13) and
Andrew Emrick (11) also reached doubles figures.
The Falcons drained 15-of-28 three-pointers in the victory, getting three apiece from
Jason Jolly, VonHandorf, Melko and Hutcherson.
The Falcons also held a 30-22 rebounding advantage and passes out 26 assists on 32 made field goals.
Jermaine Hall, Jr. led Cal (PA) with 20 points and eight rebounds. Zyan Collins and Brent Pegram also reached double-figures with 18 and 15 points, respectively for the visitors.
Cal shot nearly 52 percent from the field (31-of-60), but struggled from behind the arc (6-of-21).
Fairmont State will return to action tomorrow evening at 8 p.m. against Slippery Rock in the final game of the 2018 Joe Retton Classic. Slippery Rock dropped a 77-75 heartbreaker to Notre Dame on Friday evening at Joe Retton Arena.
