WHEELING, W.Va. -- The 2018 season came to an end on Thursday evening for Fairmont State as the Falcons suffered a 3-0 setback to No. 13 ranked Wheeling Jesuit (25-19, 27-25, 27-25) in the quarterfinal round of the Mountain East Conference Volleyball Tournament.
The Falcons end the year with a 13-17 overall record, but will return five of six starters in 2019. Wheeling Jesuit improves to 32-3 on the season.
Despite the 3-0 setback, the Falcons showed great fight and battled to the very end - falling in the second and third sets by scores of 27-25.
Rebecca Feeney paced the Falcons on Thursday evening with 12 kills and three blocks in the match.
Julia DiPaola also chipped in nine kills, and
Taylor Wisniewski added eight kills and a team-high five blocks.
Lily Keber (21) and
Kelsey Moeller (17) each recorded double-digit assists. Senior libero
Megan Clerico tallied 16 digs. Clerico's four-year Fairmont State career came to an end on Thursday evening, as the senior ranks third in school history in career digs with 1,933.
Wheeling Jesuit got a match-high 15 kills from Cassie Meyer in the victory. Haley Kramer (13) and Makenna Babb (11) also reached double-figured for the Cardinals.
Wheeling Jesuit will face rival West Liberty in the semifinal round of the MEC Tournament on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.
