DETROIT, Mich. -- Wayne State outscored Fairmont State 23-8 in the third quarter of play to pull ahead for good in a 72-65 non-conference victory over the Falcons in Detroit on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, Wayne State improves to 7-5 on the season. The Falcons fell to 5-7 on the year after winning two-straight heading into the holidays.
Fairmont State led by as many as six points on two occasions during the early moments of the third quarter before Wayne State outscored the Falcons 19-6 over the final 8:32 of the quarter to grab a seven-point advantage (52-45) with just a quarter to play.
Despite never leading in the fourth, the Falcons closed Wayne State's lead to just two points at the 2:49 mark, the 1:01 mark and :23 second mark of the fourth.
Following a layup by
Brooke Kurucz with :23 seconds remaining, though, Wayne State closed out the game with five-straight points to pick up the win, 72-65.
Fairmont State shot 42.6 percent from the field, but struggled from behind the arc making just 5-of-20 attempts from long range.
Kurucz paced the Falcons in the setback with 26 points, seven rebounds and four steals.
Kamrin Weimer and
Rachel Laskody also chipped in 13 points apiece, and
Sierra Kotchman rounded out the Falcons in double figures with 11.
Wayne State struggled from the field at just 38.6 percent, and made just four 3-pointers in the win. Ja'Nae Williams led Wayne State with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Nastassja Chambers also came off the bench and chipped in 16 points and eight rebounds for the Warriors.
Wayne State dominated the glass in the win, holding a 47-25 rebounding advantage and a 32-20 scoring advantage in the paint.
Fairmont State will return to Mountain East Conference action on Thursday, Jan. 10 at UVa-Wise. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
