Jolly's Jumper Lifts Fairmont State Past No. 8 West Liberty

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Jason Jolly banked in an off-balanced jumper with just over a second remaining to give Fairmont State a 106-104 victory over No. 8 West Liberty on Sunday evening at Joe Retton Arena.
 
With the win, Fairmont State takes over sole possession of first place in the Mountain East Conference with a 6-0 mark in league play. The Falcons also picked up their eighth-consecutive victory and improved to 8-2 overall this season. WLU falls to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in league play.
 
Fairmont State has now won five of the last six meetings against West Liberty at Joe Retton Arena, and the Hilltoppers have been ranked in the top 10 in the country during each matchup.
 
Vonte Montgomery and Jolly both recorded 30-point scoring performances to lead the Falcons in the victory. Montgomery, who was honored prior to the game for becoming the 49th player in school history to score 1,000 career points, netted a game- and career-high 33 points to go with six rebounds in the victory. Jolly, who made the game-winning basket, went 7-of-11 from behind the arc and finished the evening with 30 points, five rebounds and three assists.
 
Andrew Emrick also came off the bench and chipped in 17 points on 8-of-9 from the field.
 
West Liberty had five players reach double-figures in the setback, led by Yahel Hill with 25 points on 8-of-13 from the field. Dalton Bolon also chipped in 24 points to go with 11 rebounds and four assists.
 
The game was evenly matched with West Liberty outshooting Fairmont State by a slight edge (51.5%-50.7%). Fairmont State held a 14-12 advantage in 3-point field goals and both teams' shot 80 percent from the free throw line. West Liberty held a 40-32 advantage on the glass.
 
The game totaled 16 lead changes and nine ties. However, the Falcons led for the final 11:58 of the game, with the exception of a pair of ties at the 11:27 mark and the 0:23-second mark.
 
Fairmont State led by as many as nine at the 4:35 mark of the second half.
 
Fairmont State will now prepare for a showdown with another top 10 opponent when Indiana (PA) visits Joe Retton Arena on Friday evening. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
