FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Fairmont State got back on track by controlling West Virginia State, 94-81, on Saturday evening inside Joe Retton Arena on senior day.
Fairmont State raced out to a 52-30 lead at the break and led by as many as 30 with 10:48 remaining in the second half (78-48), before WV State closed the margin late in the game as the Falcons began to empty the bench.
With the win, Fairmont State improves to 19-7 overall and 15-5 in Mountain East Conference play. WVSU falls to 12-13 overall and 10-10 in league play.
Both of Fairmont State's seniors made their presence felt on Saturday afternoon, as
D'Ondre Stockman recorded a team-high 19 points to go with a career-high 11 rebounds, and
Caleb Davis became the 48
th player in Fairmont State history to go over 1,000 career points – finishing the afternoon with 10 points and seven rebounds. The Falcons also got 15 points from
Jason Jolly, 13 from
Andrew Emrick and 10 from
R.J. Hutcherson in the win.
The Falcons managed just 40 percent from the field (32-of-80), but pulled down 22 offensive rebounds and scored 27 second-chance points to keep control of the game. Fairmont State held a commanding 55-40 rebounding advantage in the victory.
West Virginia State shot 44.6 percent from the field (33-of-74), getting 17 points apiece from Jeremiah Moore and Pat Johnson-Agwu in the setback.
Fairmont State will now hit the road for its final two regular season games, starting with a matchup against West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
