BUCKHANNON, W.Va. --
Ozge Yarga's free throw with 15.7 seconds remaining proved to be the difference as Fairmont State topped West Virginia Wesleyan, 64-63, on Wednesday night at the Rockefeller Center.
Â
The win helps Fairmont State improve to 15-12 overall and 10-11 in Mountain East Conference play. The Bobcats fall to 8-19 overall and 6-15 in league play.
WVWC had the ball with the game tied, but Brittany Stawovy's three was blocked and Yarga came up with the loose ball and was fouled to send her to the line. After making 1-of-2, West Virginia Wesleyan set up its final possession, but the three was off the mark and Fairmont State regained possession with under seven seconds to play in regulation.
Â
However, the Bobcats forced a turnover following Fairmont State's timeout and got a second look at a game-winning shot, which rimmed off to seal the win for Fairmont State.
Â
The Falcons held the Bobcats scoreless for the final 3:07 of regulation, making six consecutive stops on the defensive end to close out the game.
Sierra Kotchman led the way for Fairmont State with 20 points on 8-of-19 from the field in the victory.
Brooke Kurucz contributed 14 points, six rebounds and five assists, and
Rachel Laskody rounded out three players in double figures for the Falcons with 10. Senior
Kelli Jo Harrison just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds on the night.
Â
The Falcons shot 37 percent from the field in the victory, including 50 percent in the opening half.
Â
After Fairmont State took a 44-43 lead into the locker room at the half, the teams combined for just 40 points in the final 20 minutes of play. Both teams shot under 25 percent from the field in the second half.
Stawovy led WVWC with 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Mari Stewart added a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Stacy Remar had 13 points and dished out seven assists.
Â
Fairmont State will wrap up the regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. matchup at Shepherd University. The Falcons will look to clinch a first-round bye in the MEC Tournament with a victory on Saturday afternoon.
