BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Fairmont State swept Urbana on Sunday afternoon to take three out of four games in this weekend's Mountain East Conference series against the Blue Knights. FSU rallied for a 5-3 win in game one, before rolling to a series capping 9-1 win in game two.
With the sweep on Sunday afternoon, Fairmont State improves to 21-18 overall and 14-10 in the league.
Game 1
With Urbana leading 3-2 after five innings of play in game one, Fairmont State's
Tyler Hill drilled a solo shot into right center field to tie the game at 3-3 with just an inning to play.
After the Falcons held Urbana scoreless in the top of the seventh,
Tyler Skidmore hit the second home run of the game for the Falcons, this time a two-run, walk-off to give the Falcons the win.
Hill, who hit the game-tying home run in the sixth inning, led the Falcons in game one, going 3-of-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.
Greg Yaksich also went 2-for-4 in the game with two runs scored.
Houston Morris (3-1) earned the victory after pitching two hitless innings for the Falcons in the sixth and seventh.
Caleb Lutjens also turned in a quality start for FSU, allowing just three runs (two earned) and three hits.
Game 2
In game two, Fairmont State scored nine unanswered runs after Urbana scored the first run of the game in the top of the first.
Hill scored the first run of the game for FSU in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly to bring home Yaksich. Later in the same inning, Skidmore homered for the second time on the afternoon – this time a two-run shot to left field.
With FSU leading 3-1 in the second inning,
Ben Myers drove in two more runs on a double to right center field that brought home
Tyler Krantz and
Brooks Carr.
Austin Norman made it 6-1 in favor of FSU on an RBI single that plated Myers later in the second inning.
Fairmont State put the game away in the bottom of the fifth by scoring the final three runs of the game.
Darrin Zombro started off the scoring by hitting a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Norman. Carr capped the scoring by hitting a two-run home run to center field to push the final score to 9-1.
Luke Paull (3-2) earned the victory for the Falcons after allowing just one unearned run on three hits during his five innings of work. Paull struck out five batters in the win.
Up next: Fairmont State will return to action next Saturday when West Liberty visits to Bridgeport Recreation Complex for a four-game series. Game one is set for a 1 p.m. opening pitch.
