Falcons Fall One Win Short of MEC Championship

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Fairmont State's historic run to the Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship Match came to an end on Sunday afternoon as Concord picked up a 2-0 win to earn the league's automatic NCAA Tournament bid.
 
With the victory, Concord improves to 19-1 and will now await their seeding for next week's NCAA Tournament on Wednesday evening. The Falcons fell to 13-5-2 following the setback.
 
The Falcons will now wait until Monday at 6 p.m. to see if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament. Fairmont State ranked No. 7 in the Atlantic Region on Wednesday afternoon.
 
Concord's Yasmin Mosby scored her seventh goal of the season on a 35-yard shot down the center of the field to make the score 1-0 in the 64th minute. The Mountain Lions created some breathing room in the 82nd minute on an unassisted goal by Rachel Bell – her 17th of the season.
 
The Mountain Lions held a 15-4 advantage in total shots on the afternoon, including an 8-2 edge in shots on goal.
 
Mackenzie Gillispie and Louise Welch each had shots on goal for the Fairmont State offense. Senior Abigail Johnson also recorded a pair of shot attempts for the Falcons.
 
Taylor Kennedy, a member of the 2019 MEC All-Tournament Team, recorded six saves in the Fairmont State goal this afternoon. Kennedy and the Falcon defense came into the game on a five-game shutout streak, which was snapped this afternoon.
 
Senior Cameryn Ciresi was also named to the MEC All-Tournament Team after scoring the game-winning goal during Friday's semifinal win over West Virginia Wesleyan.
